1st NU Football Game

Matthew has joined a family of Northwestern football fans.

Let me stop my wife right there.  First of all, Matthew did not "join" our family.  A feral cat joins a herd.  A baby is borne into a family.  And pump the breaks on the "family of Northwestern football fans" thing.  Grandpa John is a Northwestern football fan.  The rest of us barely qualify as well-wishers.  Given the decades of debt I am staring at because of that school, I need the football team's support a whole lot more than they need mine.  I can name exactly one player on the Northwestern football team.  That's one more than E can name.  Compare this to the fact that I can tell you the hometowns of every player on the IU basketball roster.  E can at least rattle off the starting five.  Matthew was borne into a family of IU basketball fans.  He halfheartedly watches the Fighting Meineke Car Care Bowl Participants every Saturday with Grandpa John.  Back to E...

Thus far, the Wildcats are 5-0.

They have played five teams with a combined record of 6-14 yet were at serious risk of losing late in the fourth quarter of four of those games.

These pictures and video are from the first game of the season, which was against Syracuse.

Syracuse has not had a relevent football team since 1998.  They scored 41 points against Northwestern.

Of course, Matthew wore his new jersey!

And he loved it, just like I did when my mom dressed me for synagogue each Saturday.

The key to this video is that Matthew is all business, but Titus is really the one to watch!  He wanted nothing to do with being in the jumperoo but wanted everything to do with joining in the fun WITH Matthew:

I must say, I am very encouraged by the laser focus Matthew showed on the football game even in the midst of all the excitement and laughter going on around him.  That bodes well for when he is boldly leading Deerfield High to victory.

Maybe I Should Pay More Attention to My Son

This morning, instead of watching Matthew closely while he was playing in the family room, I was in the play room looking up an address in my e-mail.  After I found it, I went to the family room to discover he was not there.  I started calling him unsure of where he had gone.

He was in the back bathroom, a room he has never been in.

And...both hands were in the toilet.

12:30am Wake Up

It's always a little surreal when you wake up only an hour after going to sleep. You know, when you wake up at 5am, you're thinking, "uhhh, I have to wake up soon."  Conversely, when you wake up at 2am, you're yelling "GLORIOUS!!!!" But when you wake up at 12:30am and you went to bed after 11pm, it's just weird.

And that's where it gets interesting...

Mike, innocently, wakes up to go to the bathroom but finds himself unable to get out of bed. Why?  Because I am scrambling in the bed and pulling on his boxers.

Because in my mind, Matthew is in the bed and is about to crawl off.

Mikes response? "What is going on?"

I tell him of the dilemma and there we are, both searching the bed for Matthew...until I realize Matthew's not in our bed.

I was dreaming.

Not Such a Great Night's Sleep

Sleeping in Colorado has been wonderful.  The temperatures are in the forties so with a little bit of heat  on and some nice warm blankets, its perfect.  And there are nothing but twin beds.  Cuddling is great, and then that's enough.  Mike and I both enjoy a stretch; I'm talking either sleeping on a diaganol or with our legs totally out to both sides.  Okay, too much information and I have digressed.  My point in all this blah blah is that I have been sleeping really well here.

But last night, though, not so much.  And here's why...from about 2:30-4:30AM, I was listening to this delight right outside my window.  Cool during the day.  Less cool throughout the night.  My hope is that at least it worked out that he was able to find himself a mate.  Otherwise, all was lost.

As a sidenote, Mike and Matthew slept perfectly.  Is it alarming that on the same night I was relishing not sharing a bed with my husband, the mating song of a male elk awoke me from my slumber?

hi i'm matthew and this is my music table

hi i'm matthew and this is my music table i love my music table one day i am going to be a rock n roll superstar or a concert pianostar or a mailbox oh boy mail i love mail maybe i got a new present from grammy military oh boy look outside there's a magpie i love colorado.

i love music so much it is my best friend along with titus and jack and this joke is old i am going to stop now. milklady and shouty and i love to sing and dance together it is so much fun i also love to listen to music on pandora on the ipad it is fun too but what i love most is listening to immigrant song by led zeppelin on youtube and rocking out to it shouty says i am so much cooler than other babies but i don't agree with shouty raffi is not accentuating the decline of the arts in america with incoherent songs that just combine unrelated syllables i think his songs are fun and nice he really does a good job of capturing the emotion of seeing whales with polka dot tales down by the bay where the watermelons grow actually you know what shouty is right raffi is like a pox of some kind.

i can't wait til shouty introduces me to guns n roses or poison or whitesnake i am talking about the bands not the things that can hurt me.  bye bye.

Day Care?

This is yet another delayed post.  Not sure what has kept Mike and I from blogging!  Oh, work and a baby. And fatigue.  And tsunamis.  You know what I mean.

A couple months ago, Matthew and I visited Aunt Rachel's day care, consisting of Titius and another little girl who is one month older than Matthew.  Matthew asked me if he could join the group, but it's an hour drive, so I'm not sure it's gonna work out.  But it did that day.

Brushing My Teeth Beep Beep!

One of Matthew's newest favorite toys is a disposable, electric toothbrush.  He is a future dentist, I tell you.  At least for today.  He will brush your teeth, his teeth, or apparently, a zebra's teeth.

Infinitely Blessed

About a month ago, I was blessed with a nap with my little guy, on my chest, newborn style.  Hadn't had a nap like that since he was about 3 1/2 months old.

First Days in Colorado

Well, the flight was fun.  Matthew basically refused to eat lunch and only slept for about 20 minutes.

Not such a great 2 hour car ride up the mountain either.

But then, we made it!  Matthew was so excited to crawl all over the house, exploring everything and playing with new toys.

Matthew seeing his first mountain
We were welcomed home from the grocery store by a herd of elk on the property.  Really fun.  There was one male with huge antlers that bugled.  Matthew's response: legs kicking and "bugling" (i.e. screaming) back!

Mike celebrated this by eating elk and wild boar the following night.

Yesterday, we planned to go on a hike at either Bear Lake or Sprague Lake (two of our favorites) although the road was closed for construction.  We decided to drive up Trail Ridge Road which takes you as high as you can go via car in Rocky Mountain National Park.  We ended up stopping short of the top, at 11,000 ft above sea level because we wanted to go for a hike and had had enough of the winding road with windy conditions and no side rails.  Below is a picture for the top of the tundra.

And this is how we ended the night:
